Beef and Salmon looks to make history at 2008 Irish Grand National
Soft ground is expected ahead of the 2008 Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Monday. The wet weather that has lashed the United Kingdom for the past two weeks was broken by a short dry spell that allowed the turf to dry out enough to ensure a good spectacle.
While Ireland’s top trainers will be pleased with the prospects for a good run for their charges at Fairyhouse on Monday, the soft conditions are likely to cause Beef or Salmon problems as he attempts to negotiate the course under top weight. A loss may well spell the end of the Irish veteran’s career.
Should 25-1 priced Beef or Salmon manage to win the 2008 Irish Grand National, he will become the first horse since Flashing Steel to carry top weight to victory in the race, which may have some bearing on why he was not withdrawn from the 45 entries left standing after the final forfeit.
The large field set to contest the 2008 Irish Grand National includes a surprisingly small showing from English racehorses, with only 5 due to compete in the race. The minor English presence is partially due to the withdrawal of several English racehorses who suffered weight penalties after winning at the Cheltenham Festival.
