Irish Grand National Results

The 2007 Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National saw Butler’s Cabin, trained by Jonjo O’Neill and ridden by Tom McCoy, race to victory. With odds of 14/1, Butler’s Cabin made it in ahead of Ferdy Murphy’s Nine de Sivola by a single length.

Third place was taken by US-born American Jennie, and Church Island took fourth with Andrew Macnamara on the saddle. Disappointments in the 2007 Irish Grand National included an unexpectedly poor performance by Cane Brake, who was carrying top weight, and a pile-up of three horses – Cheeky Lady, A New Story and Dix Villez – at the third fence. Sadly, Cheeky Lady’s fall at the fence proved fatal.

The Irish Grand National 2007 win by Butler’s Cabin was particularly special, after success by Butler’s Cabin at the 2007 Cheltenham Festival. In Grand National betting odds for 2008, this horse is likely to be a favourite.

The 2007 Irish Grand National saw Dix Villez and Church Island take the lead in the early field. Almost a dozen horses – including Tom Taafe’s Kings Advocate, jockeyed by Ruby Walsh – lagged behind with chances at second-last place.

Then the race was really on between Butler’s Cabin and Nine de Sivola. After a clean jump of the last fence, JP McManus-owned Butler’s Cabin grabbed the lead and took the prize. After passing the finish line to take the win, Butler’s Cabin collapsed and failed to make it to the winner’s enclosure.

Butler’s Cabin Quotes

Trainer O’Neill said, “The horse is grand now. It happens all the time as he gets a bit excited. He’s a great jumper and he had a great spin round. He jumped away well and it all went right for him. I didn’t have to do that much to him – the horse did all of the work.”

Butler’s Cabin jockey, Tony McCoy: “We got a good clear run and he was always travelling well, which you need in a handicap like this.”

Also from jockey McCoy, after the 2007 Irish Grand National: “Any horse that can win over 4 miles at Cheltenham and then win an Irish National is obviously very special”.
